Cleaning the Automatic Maintenance System (AMS)

Introduction

Clean the Automatic Maintenance System station daily to remove any residual ink before it dries. Note that there are two AMS stations and you only need to clean the active one (unless the other was also used).

Equipment

  • Safety glasses with side shields

  • Gloves (for example: Ansell Microflex 93-260)

  • Foam Tipped Swab (3010118211)

  • Cloth-Poly Wipe 10cm x 10cm (lint-free)

  • Surface Cleaner

  • Isopropyl alcohol - IPA (>= 98%)

NOTE

Put 4 or 5 swabs into the small bottle of Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and place all of the equipment near the AMS before you start.

Procedure

  1. Remove the cover plate as shown below (Hint: you can insert the handle end of a swab and then slide in the direction of the arrow on the cover, and then start the lift).
  2. Turn the cover plate over and clean the underside using a lint-free cloth and Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or Surface Cleaner. Also if you see any ink on the plate that supports the cover clean that as well.
  3. From the Tools and Utility tab menu, click on the Move Carriage to move it to the center and expose the AMS. Click on either the Right or Left button to apply vacuum to the suction heads for 30 seconds (Right is the primary AMS located near where the carriage parks and Left is the secondary AMS).
    IMPORTANT

It is extremely important that you NOT apply any downward pressure on the suction head. If a suction head is pressed down more than 1mm (0.039in) its suction plate can be damaged and automatic printhead maintenance will not work properly. A service visit is required to fix a damaged mounting plate.

  4. While the suction is active, gently draw a swab soaked in Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) across the top of the suction heads to remove any ink deposits or other debris . Rotate the swab and replace it with a clean one when the ink builds up. You may need 4 to 6 swabs to clean all 6 heads.
    NOTE

Do not continue cleaning if the vacuum shuts off (after 30 seconds). Press the button again to start the vacuum and use a new swab to finish the cleaning.

  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 if further cleaning is required.
  6. Replace the AMS cover.
