Print a job

The basic steps to follow for printing a job:

IMPORTANT

If this is the first print of the day, perform daily maintenance. See Maintenance Guidelines for details.

Procedure

  1. Prepare a digital image with ONYX Thrive

The operator must be trained to use ONYX Thrive. Training is provided by ONYX.

  2. Send the job from ONYX software to the printer

When the job is sent, it will appear on the printer monitor in the list of Active print jobs.

  3. Measure the media thickness

Use a digital slide caliper to accurately measure the thickness of the media. A small error in measurement of media thickness can reduce print quality. A large error can cause a carriage crash with the media.

  4. Click on the job in the active job list to select it.

Check the print parameters in the Job information panel.

  5. Click the Print icon

The [Flatbed printing parameters] menu will be displayed. Enter the measured media thickness value and set the lamp levels. Select the Confirm Printing parameters buttons when the information is correct.

  6. Prepare the media for printing
    • Place and register the media on the printer vacuum table

Place the media on the table in the orientation that matches the placement settings of the job (use the table rulers and the registration pins to help with placement - see Media Registration).

    • Mask table areas that are not covered with media

To hold the media to the table it is important to completely cover the rest of the vacuum table with either media of the same thickness, or a masking material. The masking material should not be thicker than the media to be printed on. If a full bleed image is to be printed, the masking material should be the same thickness as the media to be printed on to prevent ink overspray.

    • Turn on table vacuum

Set vacuum zone control handles. The control handles determine the state of the vacuum zones. When the handle is vertical, the zone is open and creates a vacuum in the related area. See How to Use the Vacuum Zones.

Click on the Vacuum button in the printer UI to activate the table vacuum. Also a vacuum foot pedal switch is provided to help secure the media on the table vacuum. Step on the foot pedal to toggle the table vacuum on or off.

      IMPORTANT

When the vacuum is switched off, wait a few seconds before you switch it on again.

    • Clean the media, if required

If the media is dusty or dirty, clean it with an appropriate cleaner. If using a liquid like isopropyl alcohol, allow sufficient time to dry prior to imaging.

  7. Start to print

The physical Print button is located at the corner of the table where media is loaded and a Start print is also available in the UI. Press either Print button to start the print job.
