Print double-sided with manual cut

Introduction

Colorado 1650 offers the possibility to print on the inside as well as on the outside of the media, which indirectly provides the user a way to print double-sided.

To print double-sided, first print on the outside of the media and then print on the inside.

Before you begin

  • Use automatic advance correction (AAC) to achieve an optimal x-registration.

AAC prints yellow or black markers on the media that the printer uses as guidance to optimise the media step accuracy. See "Change the media settings" in the operation guide.

  • Use the tension bar (locked).

In case the media is normally (single-sided) printed without tension bar, switch to the locked tension bar mode.

You can change this tension bar setting for the media type in the RIP. Change from [No tension bar] to [Locked tension bar].

  • Use a matte print mode, preferably the same mode for both sides.

  • Do not enable automatic media advance or moist sensitivity settings.

Be aware you have to rotate the job for the inside 180 degrees.

The lead-in and lead-out images are used by the AAC to measure and correct the additional media step errors caused by the ink layer of side 1, while printing side 2.

Procedure

  1. Load an empty take-up roll core onto the roll winder.
  2. Load a media roll on position 1 in the media drawer, see "Load a media roll (position 1)" in the operation guide.
  3. On the operator panel tap on the [Media] icon on the right.
  4. Tap on [Feed]. The printer feeds the media in the correct position to start printing.
  5. Tape first the centre and then the sides of the media to the core.
  6. Place the tension bar lever in locked position and place the tension bar.
  7. Move the media guides towards the middle to align with the media.
  8. Prepare a nest of prints for the outside of the media in one of the supported RIP software applications.

In ONYX the nesting function is called [Group jobs]. Change the group setting from [Conserve media] to [Group jobs together]. The RIP will treat all jobs in the group as 1 image.

    The nest includes:

    • a leading strip

    • a lead-in image (in any colour)

    • the user images

    • a lead-out image (in any colour)

    • a trailing strip with a line (this is a self made image with a cutting line at the end)

    NOTE

Please note that when you apply additional space between the separate images, you have to subtract this additional space from the 1600 mm at the trailing edge.

  9. Submit the job to the printer.
  10. Cut the media beneath the printed line.
  11. Remove the tension bar.
  12. Move the media guides to the side.
  13. Remove the take-up media roll from the winder, see "Unload a take-up media roll from the roll winder" in the operation guide.
  14. Cut the media precisely on the printed line. Do this outside of the printer.
  15. Place a new empty take-up roll core and push the media shaft back on the winder.
  16. Remove the media roll from position 1 in the media drawer, see "Unload a media roll from the drawer" in the operation guide.
  17. Load the media roll for inside printing on position 2 in the media drawer, see "Load a media roll for inside printing" in the operation guide.
  18. Tap on the [Media] icon on the right.
  19. Tap on [Feed]. The printer feeds the media in the correct position to start printing.
  20. Tape first the centre and then the sides of the media to the core.
  21. Place the tension bar lever in locked position and place the tension bar.
  22. Move the media guides towards the middle to align with the media.
  23. Prepare the nest of prints for the second side of the double-sided print in one of the supported RIP software applications.

    The nest includes:

    • a leading strip

    • a lead-in image (in any colour)

    • the user images

      NOTE

Depending on the application you may need to rotate or mirror the images for side 2.

  24. Submit the job to the printer.
