Introduction

DFD-1

The DFD-1 (Document Finishing Device) interface is a simple low level parallel interface. Basic finisher control and status feedback is achieved with 8 input lines (only 3 used) and 8 output lines (only 3 used).

In DFD-1 only 6 lines of the available 16 are used. As such, the interface does not fully utilise the possibilities the hardware offers.

However, the DFD-1 interface has a steady basis in the field. It will be supported despite all its disadvantages.

For the complete interface specification, see Océ DFD-2 interface specification.

DFD-2

The DFD-2 interface offers a substantial number of functional improvements compared to DFD-1. However, despite all the improvements in DFD-2, three important shortcomings cannot be solved completely, because of the limited communication possibilities of the interface:

  • Error recovery cannot be guaranteed in 100% of the error situations.

  • A lot of settings need to be done separately/twice on printer and finisher.

  • The productivity of a printer-finisher combination is not optimal in all situations.

For the complete interface specification, see Océ DFD-2 interface specification.
