A symbol set is a specified ordering of characters within a font. The International Standards Organisation (ISO) has defined a certain number of symbol sets, many containing the special characters to be found in specific European languages. Special characters are, for example, the cedilla (e.g. ç) for French and Portuguese symbol sets. Also, the tilde character (ñ) for Spanish symbol sets.
Hewlett-Packard has also defined several of its own symbol sets, for example, HP Roman-8, HP Legal, HP Math-8, PC-8.
The symbol set assigns an ASCII value to a defined character. For example, the hexadecimal value 9c is defined by HP_PC-8 to represent the U.K. Pound sign (£).
The euro symbol is supported on certain symbol sets. The character ID to use depends on the symbol set:
For symbol sets 14, 78, 174, 629, 293 and 180 the ID is 128.
For symbol sets 394 and 173 the ID is 240.
For symbol set 437 the ID is 213.
On symbol sets not mentioned above, the euro symbol is not supported. When the euro symbol is printed it is taken from the current font if this font supports it, otherwise it is selected from a set of supplementary fonts, respecting the font characteristics (serif/sans-serif and bold/normal).
The euro symbol is not supported in the default symbol set (341).
