Replace a drive gear on a media shaft

Introduction

You can replace a drive gear on a media shaft without service assistance.

For inside winding, you need the new take-up media shaft. The gear inside the new take-up media shaft is marked with the number 2.

About this task

When the teeth of a drive gear are damaged, you can replace one or both drive gears of your media shaft. The procedure below can be used either on the feed media shaft or the take-up media shaft.

When the metal shaft itself is damaged, you have to replace the complete media shaft. You can request a new part from your local representative.

Before you begin

Use Colorado 1650 prescribed:

  • Screwdriver (Torx-20)

  • Drive gear

NOTE

CAUTION

  • Watch your fingers when you handle the media roll.

  • Lifting heavy media, 25 kg (55 lb) or more, has to be done by two people or with the help of external lifting tools.

Procedure

  1. Move to the media input side or the media output side of the printer.
  2. When a media roll is loaded on the media shaft, first unload the media roll.

  3. Take out the media shaft.
  4. Locate the damaged drive gear at the end of the media shaft.
  5. Unscrew the four screws of the drive gear (1) with the Torx-20.
  6. Remove the drive gear (2) carefully to not lose any of the hex nuts inside the media shaft.
  7. Take out the four hex nuts from the slots.
  8. Take a new drive gear and insert the four hex nuts in the slots.
  9. Place the new drive gear into position on the media shaft (1). Make sure you align the drive gear with the markers inside the shaft.
  10. Fasten the four screws (2), hand tight.
  11. When you want to replace the second drive gear of the media shaft, repeat steps 4 to 10.
  12. The media shaft is now ready for use.

    You can load either a media roll or a take-up roll core. Then, place the media shaft back in the media drawer or on the roll winder.
