PDF implementation

PDF files can be printed through APPE or PDF2PS.

  • The Adobe PDF print engine (APPE) directly converts the PDF data into bitmaps.

  • The Adobe PDF to Postscript converter (PDF2PS) converts the PDF data into postscript. The Adobe postscript interpreter is then used to create the bitmaps to be printed.

APPE is the default for PDF interpreting because the PDF to Postscript conversion has limitations with regards to colour handling and transparencies. These limitations are due to the limitations of the Postscript language itself. PDF2PS is offered for legacy applications. You can switch to PDF2PS through an automated workflow.

The PRISMAsync Print Server uses APPE version 4.8.
