Perform shading correction

In most cases, an automatic gradation adjustment is sufficient to deliver the required colour quality. However, in the following situations it is necessary to perform also the shading correction:

• after the installation of the print system;

• when the printed output shows uneven colour densities in the colour panes;

• when your service organisation replaces system parts.

Shading correction

When different supported calibration media are loaded and assigned, the shading correction procedure will select the media of the largest size. Both coated and uncoated media are suitable for this procedure.

NOTE

The default calibration media for shading correction is defined in the Settings Editor: [Color]  → [Color calibration]  → [Default calibration media for shading correction] .

The default calibration media for shading correction is configured per measurement device.

Tools

• i1Pro3 spectrophotometer (i1Pro2 also supported)

• Sensing unit (optional)

• Glass plate (optional)

• Document feeder (optional)

Procedure

1. Calibrate the printer.

   IMPORTANT

   You must always perform a printer calibration before you continue with this procedure.

2. If you are going to use the spectrophotometer for this procedure, connect the i1Pro3 spectrophotometer to the USB port of the control panel.

3. Touch [System]  → [Color adjustment]  → [Select printer calibration procedures] .

4. Select [Shading correction].

5. Touch [Start printer calibration].

6. Select the measurement device (only if the sensing unit, glass plate or document feeder is installed).

7. Select the measurement mode: quick or full.

   It is recommended to choose the [Full] mode for a full correction. You can use the [Quick] mode for a quick but less complete correction.

   If you use the [Quick] mode,

   • the shading correction procedure with the sensing unit takes two minutes.

   • the shading correction procedure with the glass plate or document feeder involves printing and scanning of one chart.

   If you use the [Full] mode,

   • the shading correction procedure with the sensing unit takes four minutes.

   • the shading correction procedure with the glass plate or document feeder involves printing and scanning of two charts.

8. Touch [OK]

9. Follow the instructions on the control panel.

After you finish

When the shading correction fails with a "density not within required range" error, perform a correction procedure for this error.
