PDF font settings are added, giving more control over PDF font processing as different customers need different approaches.
Fonts in PDF’s can be embedded in the PDF or not embedded. On embedded or non-embedded fonts different processing policies can be set within PRISMA.
The steps in processing of non-embedded (missing) fonts are:
First the missing fonts are replaced by the fonts on the RIP if available. This is standard behavior for all APPE engines and can’t be changed.
Only if the font is not available on the system, the processing strategy which is set in the settings editor will be applied. The processing strategy can be set to “emulate” or “fail”.
Emulate: (default)
Missing Roman fonts are replaced with one of the two "Multiple Master" font. "Multiple Master" fonts are programmable fonts that can be adjusted based on the characteristics of the initial font: character width, spacing, italic et cetera.
Emulate font is no guaranty that the output will be flawless. Because it is an emulation output may differ from what a customer intended, or may not work at all in case on insufficient data, with a PDF error as result.
Fail:
The PDF jobs leads to an PDF font error and therefore to an error page.
The steps in processing of embedded fonts are:
Only the embedded font is used, so no substitution is in order.
In case the embedded font is (partly) corrupt or incomplete complete, the processing strategy which is set in the settings editor will be applied. The processing strategy can be set to “Strict” or “Best effort”.
Strict: (default)
If case of a corrupted font the job will immediately abort on the specific page with a PDF error and therefor to an error page.
Best Effort:
Adobe’s Best effort is applied. This strategy attempts to solve corrupt font issues. This may however lead to formatting issues like bad incomplete or missing characters (Acrobat behavior).
Rebooting the system is needed after changing these setting for proper processing. Existing files are not affected (preview / warning thumbnail and ripped data) so re-rip the files is needed or to update the previews.
The fonts available in PS are also available for PDF, except for the Asian fonts. Asian fonts are only available for PDF2PS. Additional fonts are available for PDF only.
