NOTE
It is recommended to embed all used fonts in the PDF file. This ensures proper printing of the PDF file.
When PDF font substitution is enabled, any missing font in the PDF job is replaced with an alternate font available in the PDL. Contrary to PS substitution, details of PDF font substitution is not a public technology from Adobe. The mechanism is more advanced. An alternate font is either built or found among the available fonts.
Missing Roman fonts are replaced with one of the two 'Multiple Master' font. 'Multiple Master' fonts are programmable fonts that can be adjusted based on the characteristics of the initial font: character width, spacing, italic et cetera.
Missing Asian fonts characters are replaced with characters from the available Asian fonts. Font substitution depends on the font pack that are licensed. When no Asian font license is available, missing Asian characters are taken from the KozGoPro-medium and KozMinProVI-Regular fonts, if available.
When PDF font substitution is disabled, any missing font in the PDF jobs leads to an "Unable to find font" PDF error. The name of the missing font appears in the error message.
NOTE
The fonts available in PS are also available for PDF, except for the Asian fonts. Asian fonts are only available for PDF2PS. Additional fonts are available for PDF only.
