Introduction

This document describes the interface between printers and external finishers connected via the Document Finishing Device (DFD) interface.

Goals

The purpose of this specification is to provide a common base for the implementation of the hardware and software interconnection between Canon printers and external finishers.

Terms

Printer

The complete printing system, including paper input modules, printing module and integrated finishing modules.

DFD Finisher

3rd party finisher which supports the DFD interface.

For DFD two different input height of the OEM finisher are supported:

  • DFD-860: 860 ± 28 mm

  • DFD-1020: 1020 ± 28 mm

NOTE

DFD-860 is preferred;

External Finisher

3rd party finisher with DFD interface.

3rd party outlet

The paper outlet in the printer where the sheets are transferred to the external finisher.

Non-DFD Finisher

A finisher which does not support the DFD interface.

E.g. Canon finisher with a CAN/ARCnet interface

Upstream unit

Unit that is closer to the engine.

Downstream unit

Unit that is further away from the engine.

Pass through unit

Unit that is able to transport /bypass sheets to a downstream unit.

End unit

Unit that is not able to transport sheets to a downstream unit.

Settings editor

The editor on a separate PC where the key operator can change printer settings.

Cycle Time,

Interval time.

The time between the leading edge of a sheet and the leading edge of the next sheet.

Intersheet Time

Time between the Trailing Edge of the previous sheet and the Leading Edge of the succeeding sheet.

Abbreviation

DFD

Document Finishing Device being the name of the interface.

DFD-1

DFD specification version 1.x

DFD-2

DFD specification version 2.x.

DFD-3

DFD specification version 3.x.

LUI

Local user interface.

HCS3

High capacity stacker a.k.a. HCS3.

IPM

Images per minute. A simplex sheet is 1 image and a duplex sheet 2.

LE

Leading edge, the front edge of the sheet in paper transport direction.

LEF

Long edge feed, the long edge of the sheet is the leading edge.

MST

Machine Settings Table; to describe the behaviour of the finisher for automatic control by the printer.

3rd party outlet

The outlet of the printer towards the external finisher.

OHP paper

Over-Head Projection/Projector paper.

Not available for varioPRINT 6000 series

PPM

Pages per minute. This can be both a duplex and simplex printed page.

SEF

Short edge feed, the short edge of the sheet is the leading edge.

TE

Trailing edge, the rear edge of the sheet in paper transport direction
