Create a variable data job

What is a variable data job

Variable data printing is used for direct marketing, advertising, and personalized letters. PRISMAprepare and other document authoring tools allow for building personalized documents. Variable data, for example names and addresses, are merged with fixed elements and saved as multi-record documents

Creation of personalized documents

The printer supports PDF/VT level 1 and PPML for variable data printing. PDF/VT follows the latest PDF standards. When the printer receives a variable data job, it automatically distinguishes the record structure. Records are handled and printed as sets. Records do not necessarily contain the same number of pages. The number of pages per record depends on the length of the variable data in each personalized document.

The printing of a variable data job is like the printing of a normal job.

  • Print a proof.

  • Print a range of records.

  • Interrupt the printing after a certain record, and resume printing of the job later.

  • Change the settings of the job. Be aware that when you change the settings of a variable data job, the settings apply to all records of the job.

Convert a job to a variable data job

A large PDF job that has a record structure in itself—for example a file with multiple personalized documents—can be converted into a variable data job via the job properties. This is helpful when you want to print only a part of the document (one or more records).

  1. Select the job you want to convert.

  2. Touch [Edit], or double tap the job.

  3. Use the [Job type] setting to select [Variable data].

    Change job type
  4. Specify the structure of the job.

Indicate the structure of the job
  5. Touch [OK], and again [OK] to start the conversion.

The icon indicates the new variable data job.
