Configure, upload and install operating system updates from a file

Introduction

This topic describes how to configure, upload and install operating system updates from a file via the Settings Editor.

The downloaded operating system update package is cumulative. This means that the package includes all preceding patches.

NOTE

This procedure applies only to operating system updates that are manually uploaded in the Settings Editor.

Approach

The operating system updates can be downloaded via: https://downloads.cpp.canon/.

The operating system updates consist of multiple files. This is called an update package. All files must be installed.

The file names start with MSU followed by a 5-digit number. The files must be installed in ascending order based on this number.

IMPORTANT

From software version Mark 8.1.3, updates can be installed simultaneously in any order. If your system has a lower Mark version, you must install the files in the correct order. You can check the software version in the Settings Editor via [Support]  → [About]  → [Version of software].

During the installation of the operating system updates the printer remains operational. To finalize the installation, you must restart the system.

Before you begin

  • You must be logged in as a system administrator.

  • Download the operating system update package for the [Version of printer software] of your printer via https://downloads.cpp.canon/.

Configuration of operating system updates from a file via the Settings Editor

  1. Open the Settings Editor and go to: [Support]  → [Software updates].

  2. Go to [Operating system updates].

  3. Click [Configure].

  4. Use the [Installation moment] to select the installation time.

    • [Immediately]: The printer installs the operating system updates once they are present on the system. The printer remains operational. To finalize the installation, you must restart the system.

    • [At specified time]: The printer installs the operating system updates at the time you specify. The printer remains operational. To finalize the installation, you must restart the system.

    • [Manually]: You install operating system updates manually once they are present on the system. The printer remains operational. To finalize the installation, you must restart the system.

  5. Select [Send email to system administrator about status of updates] to receive status information about the installation process. System administrators who have a configured email address receive these emails.

You receive an email when the following status has been reached:

    • When you select [Manually] in the [Installation moment] setting, you receive an email when operating system updates are available for installation and when you must restart the system to finalize the installation.

    • You receive an email when operating system updates are being installed.

    • You receive an email when operating system updates have been installed.

    • You receive an email when an error occurs during downloading or installation of the software updates.

  6. Click [OK].

Upload and install an operating system update from a file via the Settings Editor

  1. Open the Settings Editor and go to: [Support]  → [Software updates].

  2. Go to [Operating system updates].

  3. Check if the update is already installed: compare the "kb" number from the update with the "kb" number of installed updates. If the update is already installed, do not install it again.

  4. Click [Install from file].

  5. Click [Select a file] to navigate to the operating system updates that needs to be installed.

  6. Click [OK] to upload the selected file to the printer.

The duration of the upload and validation process depends on the size of the update. Do not restart your system during this process.

  7. When the update is uploaded, click [OK] to start the preparation.

  8. Click [OK] when the progress bar shows 100%. Depending on your configuration, the system automatically starts the installation or you need to start the installation with the [Install updates] button.

  9. To finalize the installation, you must restart the system.

Select the restart moment and click on [OK].

After you restart the system, the software update is removed from the list in [Available PRISMAsync and operating system updates from On Remote Service].

The installed software update can be seen in one of the following lists:

  • [Installed PRISMAsync updates], if the software update is a printer software update.

  • [Operating system updates], if the software update is an operating system update.
